Power effect of ultrasonically vibrated spacers in air gap membrane distillation: Theoretical and experimental investigations

چکیده
This study investigates the efficiency of low-power ultrasound in range 3.5–30.0 W to improve permeate flux and alleviate membrane fouling an air–gap distillation (AGMD) system. Natural groundwater reverse osmosis (RO) reject water were fed into AGMD system on which experiments conducted with hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. After 35 h operation RO water, caused decrease by 30% 40% respectively. Concentration polarization, intermediate pore blocking, cake filtration appear be main reasons for decline both feedwater types. Ultrasound application a short period 15 min resulted improvement as high 400% 250% groundwater, Modelling heat mass transfers showed that increase was mainly due permeability improvements under ultrasonic vibration. Fouling visualisation using Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed effectively removed without compromising membrane’s structure. Importantly, targeted appears proportionally higher than those high-power applied whole system, per W/m2 basis.

Effect of Module Inclination Angle on Air Gap Membrane Distillation
Air gap membrane distillation (AGMD) experiments were performed with varied temperature and varied module inclination angles to characterize the effect of module angle on permeate production and thermal performance. While AGMD is potentially one of the most energy efficient membrane distillation configurations, transport resistances in the air gap typically dominate the thermal performance, res...
متن کاملExperimental and Theoretical Investigations of a Novel Multi-Stage Direct Contact Membrane Distillation Module
Global climate change and variability have a negative impact on a water supply and quality in remote areas by reducing water availability and contaminant dilution. This will continue to be exacerbated by limited and inadequate water supply, insufficient water treatment and low infrastructure. Thus, an economic desalination system with a small scale and footprint for such regions is strongly dem...
متن کاملComparisons of Experimental and Simulated Velocity Fields in Membrane Module Spacers
Spacers are used in spiral wound and plate and frame membrane modules to create flow channels between adjacent membrane layers and mix fluid within the flow channel. Flow through the spacer has a significant beneficial impact on mixing and resulting mass transfer rates but is accompanied by an undesirable increase in pressure drop. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a common tool used to eva...

Polyvinylidene fluoride/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVDF/PVP) hollow fiber membranes were fabricated by dry-jet wet-spinning process. The correlated effects of the air gap length and PVP concentration ((1) the air gap length effect at the low and high PVP concentration in the dope solutions, as well as (2) the effect of the PVP concentration at the same air gap length) on the cross-section structure ...
متن کاملTheoretical framework for predicting inorganic fouling in membrane distillation and experimental validation with calcium sulfate
A methodology for predicting scaling in membrane distillation (MD), which considers thermodynamics, kinetics, and fluid mechanics, is developed and experimentally validated with calcium sulfate. The theory predicts the incidence of scaling as a function of temperature, concentration, and flow conditions by comparing the nucleation induction time to the residence time and applying an experimenta...
